September poses three precise problems for Black and Brown skin: the skin got deeper over the summer and June's foundation has become too light; office days are long and makeup has to last from 8 am to 7 pm; the sun left dark spots you want to soften without a mask. Here's the back-to-work routine in 10 minutes, the shade to choose for September, and the kit that fits in a bag.
This article is part of our complete guide to makeup for Black and Brown skin. For the complexion basics, see Foundation for Black skin: how to choose.
Your skin changed this summer

Yes, Black skin tans. It doesn't go red, but it gets deeper, by half a shade to a full shade depending on exposure, and it keeps that tone four to six weeks after you get back. That's the first cause of the "foundation that doesn't work anymore" in September: the product didn't change, the skin did. A foundation that has become too light gives an ashen face, lighter than the neck, with a grey veil on the cheeks. The undertone, however, doesn't move: golden skin stays golden, red skin stays red. If you've never determined it, do the 3-minute undertone test.
The back-to-work reflex: redo the jawline test. A stripe of foundation on the jawline, blended towards the neck, looked at in daylight. If the stripe disappears, the shade is right. If it comes out lighter, you need to go up a shade, or mix.
Which foundation shade in September

Two solutions, depending on your situation.
- You tanned clearly (holidays in the sun, the sea, outdoor sport): take the shade just above yours for September and October, then go back to your usual shade. In the NEW BLACK range, from lightest to deepest: Trois-Îlets, Santa Maria, Kribi, Moanda, Assinie, Saly. A Kribi in June is often a Moanda in September.
- You got a little deeper, no more: mix your shade and the next one on the back of your hand, half and half, then adjust. The mix follows the skin week after week, until you're back to the single shade.
In both cases, keep the same powder shade as the foundation, or half a shade deeper, never lighter: a powder lighter than the foundation means the grey veil is back. If the grey persists despite the right shade, the other causes are in Foundation that turns grey or ashy.
The office routine in 10 minutes
The goal for September isn't "more" makeup: it's a clean complexion, awake features, and 11 hours of wear. In order:
- Light moisturiser and sun protection (2 minutes). Even in September, even in the city: the September sun keeps summer's dark spots going. A fluid moisturiser, then an SPF with no white cast, well absorbed before foundation.
- Foundation in a thin layer (2 minutes). A hazelnut for the whole face, applied in the centre and pulled outwards, blended to the neck. A second pass only where needed (sides of the nose, chin). On a summer complexion, less product is enough: the skin is more even than in winter.
- Targeted concealer (1 minute). A dot on the dark spots, tapped in with a finger. No layer over the whole face.
- Powder on the T-zone (1 minute). Forehead, nose, chin, pressing. The cheeks stay bare to keep the light. Guide: Powder for Black skin.
- Blush (1 minute). Coral or hibiscus depending on the undertone, high on the cheekbone, blended towards the temple. Guide: Blush for Black skin: which colour.
- Brows and lashes (2 minutes). A brown pencil to fill in, a brush, a black mascara. These are the two steps that look "awake" in a meeting.
- Lips (1 minute). A nude with some body, or a rosy-brown gloss. The right nude for your complexion is in Nude lips for Black skin.
Total: 10 minutes, by the clock. Natural makeup in 6 steps remains the base if you want even lighter.
Lasting from 8 am to 7 pm

The back-to-work day piles up everything that moves makeup: commuting, September heat, air conditioning, screens, lunch, meetings. Four rules:
- Transfer-proof foundation is the office ally: it marks neither the shirt collar, nor the phone, nor the end-of-day scarf. How it works and which one to choose: Transfer-proof foundation.
- Thin layers everywhere. A thick layer "so it lasts" does exactly the opposite: it cracks and migrates into lines.
- One touch-up only, at midday. Blot the shine with a tissue, then a veil of tinted powder on the T-zone. Don't add foundation on top.
- Gloss in the bag. It's the only thing you reapply during the day. It gives back a polished face in ten seconds.
If your skin is oily and the makeup is gone before midday, the dedicated routine is in Foundation for oily Black skin.
Summer's dark spots
The sun marks Black and Brown skin more: every spot, every bit of friction from the summer leaves a brown mark that takes weeks to fade. In September, the classic mistake is to cover everything with a thick layer of foundation. Result: a mask, and the spots still there underneath.
The right method: foundation in a thin layer already evens out 80 %; a concealer in the exact shade of the skin, applied with a finger only on the spot, does the rest; sun protection every morning stops the spots from darkening again.
Three back-to-work looks
The same complexion, three finishes depending on the day.
- Classic office: the routine above, nude lips, discreet blush. Clean, nothing that catches the eye.
- Important meeting or video call: add a touch of golden highlighter on the top of the cheekbone and the inner corner of the eye. On a video call, the screen light is cold and flat; a golden reflection gives the face back its dimension. No silver, which goes grey on screen. Guide: Highlighter for Black skin.
- After-work drinks: keep the complexion, take the blush up a notch, switch to an orange or burgundy gloss. Three minutes in the office bathroom. To go further: Evening makeup for Black skin.
The back-to-work kit in the bag
Five products, no more, for the day and the touch-up:
- the foundation, in the September shade;
- the compact powder, with its mirror, for the midday touch-up;
- the blush;
- a nude or rosy-brown gloss;
- a mascara.
The full kit, for those starting from scratch, is detailed in the ultimate makeup kit for Black skin.
Back-to-work mistakes
- Keeping June's shade without redoing the jawline test.
- Translucent powder "to set": guaranteed grey veil on skin that got deeper.
- A thick layer to cover summer's dark spots.
- Forgetting sun protection because "it's September".
- Touching up with foundation during the day instead of powder.
- Silver highlighter on a video call.
What NEW BLACK does

Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my foundation suit me anymore after summer?
Because your skin got deeper over the summer, by half a shade to a full shade. June's foundation has become too light and gives a grey veil. Redo the jawline test and go up a shade, or mix two shades.
Does Black skin really tan?
Yes. It doesn't go red, but it gets deeper, and it keeps that tone four to six weeks. The undertone, however, doesn't change.
What office makeup for dark skin?
A clean complexion in a thin layer, powder on the T-zone only, coral or hibiscus blush, brows and mascara, nude lips. Ten minutes, and a transfer-proof foundation to last the day.
How do I make makeup last all day at work?
Transfer-proof foundation in thin layers, tinted powder on the T-zone, a single touch-up at midday with powder, and gloss to reapply. Never foundation added during the day.
How do I soften summer's dark spots without a mask?
Foundation in a thin layer, concealer in the exact shade only on the spot, and sun protection every morning so the spots stop darkening.
