Mature Black skin keeps its texture, its colour and its light; what changes is hydration, contrast and a few dark spots. So the right makeup after 50 is thinner, more luminous and placed higher: a satin foundation in the exact shade, a concealer in the exact shade on dark spots, a blush placed high, a satin highlighter and a comfortable gloss. We reveal, we don't cover. Here's the method, what to keep, what to stop.
This article is part of our complete guide to makeup for Black and Brown skin. It's for women of 50, 60, 70 who have often been told that makeup "wasn't for them", and who are right not to believe it.
What really changes with age, and what doesn't

What changes: the skin is drier, the texture more visible, dark spots more present, the contrast between skin, lips and brows decreases. What doesn't change: the colour, the depth, the beauty.
Black skin ages with one advantage: it keeps its evenness and its density longer. Fine lines appear late; it's mostly dryness and dark spots (hyperpigmentation, under-eye circles) that change the complexion. Mature makeup is therefore not "anti-ageing" makeup: it's hydrated, thin and luminous makeup, which gives back the contrast that time has softened.
Prep the skin: half the result
Moisturise generously, wait five minutes, then apply. Dehydrated mature skin drinks the foundation and makes it settle into lines.
In the morning: a hydrating serum if you have one, a rich cream on the cheeks, lighter on the T-zone if it still shines. A sunscreen with no white cast on top. This is the moment to look at your skin by a window: that's where the shade is chosen.
Foundation: thin, satin, never plaster-matte
A fluid, satin foundation, applied as a veil with a damp sponge, in the exact shade. A second touch only on the areas that need evening out. Never a thick layer "to cover": it settles, it cracks, it ages.
- The shade: exact, never lighter (a lighter shade greys and accentuates dark spots). Test on the jawline, by a window: foundation guide.
- The finish: satin or velvet; full matte dulls mature skin.
- The application: damp sponge, from the centre outwards, blended to the neck. The veil leaves the skin's texture visible: that's what looks natural.
Our no-transfer fluid foundation applies thin and doesn't migrate onto collars or headwraps; applied as a veil on hydrated skin, it suits mature skin. Six shades from light to deep.
Correct dark spots without highlighting them
A concealer in the exact shade or half a shade deeper, tapped only on the spot, before the foundation veil. Never a light concealer: it turns a dark spot into a grey dot.
Under-eyes: a peach or orange concealer neutralises the purple, in a thin layer, without going up to the crease. The lower eyelid crease is made up as little as possible: product collects there.
Powder: where, and above all where not
Only on the nose, possibly the middle of the forehead, never on the cheeks or under the eyes. Tinted, never translucent.
On mature skin, powder is the product that ages a face fastest when there's too much of it: it settles into fine lines and dulls. A tinted compact powder, pressed on, on the nose only.
The blush that wakes up the face
A saturated blush, cream or satin powder, placed higher than usual, on the top of the cheekbone towards the temple. It's the move that lifts a face.
With age, the cheekbone drops slightly: placing the blush higher lifts the face. The colours: coral or terracotta on a warm undertone, soft plum or raspberry on cool, brick on neutral. A pastel blush won't show; a bright blush, blended, brings back life. Guide: Blush for Black skin: which colour. The product: NEW BLACK blush.
Light: satin, not glitter

A satin highlighter, golden or copper, as a touch on the tops of the cheekbones and the inner corner of the eye. No glitter: it marks the texture.
This is the product that gives back radiance, not a lighter foundation shade. Our highlighter in Éclipse (warm gold) or Aurore australe (rosy copper) goes on with a finger, as a touch.
Lips: comfortable gloss and warm nude

A liner in the shade of your lips (it stops colour bleeding into fine lines), a warm nude (caramel, mocha) or a soft colour, and a comfortable gloss. Avoid dry mattes and very dark colours, which harden the face.
Our gloss Datte (caramel) is the favourite of our customers over 50: it warms, it moisturises, it's reapplied without a mirror.
The eyes without weighing them down
Brows filled in brown (never black), a satin copper or bronze shadow with a finger, mascara on the upper lashes, no pencil on the lower waterline. A touch of highlighter under the brow bone lifts the eyes. Details: Eye makeup for brown eyes on olive and Black skin.
Ceremonies, Sundays, big days
Same method, dressed up: transfer-proof foundation, powder on the nose, blush one notch stronger, gloss in the bag. For long days (church, weddings, family celebrations), transfer-proof protects the headwrap and light clothes, and the gloss is reapplied in two seconds. Our guide Bridal makeup for Black skin also applies to mothers and guests.
