The nude of Black or Brown skin isn't beige: it's the colour of your lips, a little warmer and a little brighter. Caramel, cinnamon, mocha, rosy brown, soft plum depending on your undertone. A light beige "nude" greys the mouth and highlights two-toned lips. Here's how to find yours, in gloss or lipstick.
This article is part of our guide to lip makeup for Black skin.
What is a nude on Black skin?
A nude is a colour that blends with the lips instead of colouring them. On pigmented lips, that colour is brown, caramel or plum, never beige. The industry long sold a single beige-pink "nude" designed for light lips: on Black skin, it makes a "grey mouth", and that's where the false idea that nude "doesn't suit" Black skin comes from. It suits it very well, as long as it's the right one.
Finding your nude in 3 steps

- Look at your bare lips by a window: caramel, rosy brown, dark brown, plum? That's the base.
- Add a little warmth and light: the nude colour is that base, a little warmer (warm undertone) or a little pinker (cool undertone), and glossy.
- Test on the lower lip only: if it blends with the upper lip, it's your nude.
| Undertone | Your nude | The nude that greys |
|---|---|---|
| Warm, golden | Caramel, soft terracotta, orange-brown | Light rosy beige |
| Cool, pink | Mocha, rosy brown, soft mauve | Yellow beige |
| Neutral | Cinnamon, medium brown | Light beige |
| Olive, mixed-heritage, tan | Brown peach, caramel | Pale pink |
Undertone unknown? Know your undertone.
Two-toned lips: which nude?
The nude is chosen on the darker lip, then the lighter lip is harmonised with a liner in the same shade, or a slightly more generous gloss. Never a light nude to "catch up" the dark lip. Details: Lip makeup for Black skin.
Nude gloss or nude lipstick?

- Nude gloss: the simplest, the most natural, the most forgiving: it lets the colour of the lips live. At NEW BLACK, Datte (caramel) and Eau de Coco (luminous sheer) are the two most requested nudes. See Lip gloss for Black skin: which colour.
- Nude lipstick: for full colour; satin or creamy finish, never dry matte on Black skin (it switches the mouth off). With a matching liner.
- Both: liner + nude lipstick + gloss in the centre = the nude for ceremonies.
By occasion
- Every day: Eau de Coco or Datte alone.
- Work: brown liner + Datte.
- Nude evening: dark brown liner, caramel lipstick, gloss.
- Mature skin: comfortable nude gloss, liner to last; no matte. See Makeup for mature Black skin.
The mistakes
- Light beige nude.
- Candy pink presented as nude.
- Dry matte on pigmented lips.
- Lightening the dark lip.
- Choosing the nude on the back of the hand (lighter than the lips).
