Because brown contains red and orange: colours that contain them too (copper, bronze, terracotta) resonate with the iris, and opposite colours (plum, violet, deep green) make it contrast.
Brown eyes are the most versatile: they take almost every colour. On olive or Black skin, two rules are added. Shadows must be highly pigmented (deeper skin absorbs light shadows, which become invisible or chalky), and reflections must be golden or copper rather than silver (silver looks ashy on warm skin).

To avoid: cool pastels (pale pink, light lilac, pearl grey) that grey the eyes, pearly white in the inner corner (replaced by gold), and matte black applied flat over the whole lid, which closes the eyes.
The 5 steps to a luminous look
Base, warm shadow, definition, mascara, light. In that order, in five minutes.
- The base. A thin layer of foundation or concealer on the lid, lightly powdered: on Black skin, the lid is often darker than the rest of the face, and a base evens it out and makes the shadow last. A dedicated eye primer intensifies the colour.
- The warm shadow. A copper, bronze or terracotta applied with a finger on the mobile lid (the finger warms the pigment and makes it more intense than a brush). Blend towards the crease with a clean brush.
- Definition. A deeper shadow (deep brown, plum) in the outer corner, in a small "V", blended. Or a line of dark brown pencil at the lash line, softer than black for daytime.
- Mascara. Black, one coat on the upper lashes, a touch on the lower ones. Waterproof for summer and ceremonies.

Olive skin or Black skin: what changes
The method is the same; the intensity of the pigments and the temperature of the reflections change.
- Olive and tan skin (Mediterranean, North African, South Asian, light mixed-heritage): coppers and terracottas are the safe bet; plum and khaki green make elegant evenings. Light golden highlighter.
- Black skin: go up a notch in pigmentation, prefer deep bronzes, intense plums, bronze greens; warm gold or copper highlighter. Gold on very dark skin is spectacular.
- Brows: in both cases, a dark brown pencil or powder, never black, filled in with small strokes. Clean brows are half the look.
Eyes after 50
Lighten up: satin shadows rather than glitter, no thick line, mascara on the upper lashes only, light in the inner corner.
On mature skin, the lid is less taut: a matte or satin shadow in a soft copper or bronze, applied with a finger, is enough. Avoid pencil on the lower waterline (it shrinks the eye) and glitter that settles into lines. A touch of satin highlighter under the brow bone lifts the eyes.
